HeartsMoon is a free site for hearts players. The name comes from shooting the moon: taking every heart and the queen of spades in one hand, the boldest play in the game. Here, as in Pagat’s rules, the player who shoots the moon chooses how it’s scored.

How the rules are checked

Every rule on this site is checked against published rule sources, quoted from their own text: Pagat’s hearts pages, Bicycle’s rules, the US Playing Card Company’s Official Rules of Card Games (editions from 1898 to 1995), Foster’s Complete Hoyle (1914), John Hay’s rules, the Hoyle software rules, Microsoft’s help for the Windows game, and the rules of the big online games (World of Card Games, Trickster, CardGames.io, Whisthub, CardGames.club and Pogo’s old game). Where they disagree, the pages say so and say who plays what.

The rules our game plays

The standard four-player game: three cards passed left, right, across and then held; the two of clubs leads; no points on the first trick; only a heart breaks hearts; 1 point a heart and 13 for the queen of spades; the shooter of a moon chooses +26 to the others or −26 to themselves; the game ends at 100, and a tie for the lowest score plays on. The house rules page lists the defaults and the alternatives.

Who runs it

HeartsMoon is part of a small family of free card game sites, alongside SpadesBid, PinochleRun, euchre.cards, CribbageBox and Rare Pike. The online game runs on the same game server as Rare Pike’s.
